Texas Hold'em rules

Every hand of Hold'em runs the same four rounds in the same order. Learn the order and the rest is detail.

2 Pre-flop 3 Flop 1 Turn 1 River cards dealt at each stage — a betting round follows every one

1. The blinds

Two players post before any cards are dealt: the small blind to the left of the dealer button, the big blind to their left. They are forced bets, and they exist so there is something to play for. The button moves one seat clockwise after every hand.

2. Pre-flop

Everyone gets two private cards. Betting starts to the left of the big blind and goes clockwise. Each player folds, calls the biggest bet so far, or raises. The big blind acts last and may raise even if nobody else did.

3. The flop

Three community cards are dealt face up, shared by everyone. Betting starts with the first active player left of the button. From here on a player may also check — stay in without betting — if nobody has bet yet.

4. The turn and the river

A fourth and then a fifth community card, with a betting round after each. By the river every player has seen the same five shared cards plus their own two.

5. Showdown

The best five cards win, made from any combination of the seven available. You may use both, one, or neither of your own cards — if the board is the best five, everyone still in chops the pot. The last player to bet shows first; if there was no bet, the first player left of the button does.

The rules that cause the arguments

A raise must be at least the size of the previous bet or raise. Cards speak at showdown, so a hand that is misread still wins if it is best. A player who is all-in cannot win more from each opponent than they put in themselves — the rest forms a side pot the others play for.

String bets and verbal declarations

Put the chips in with one motion, or say the amount first. Reaching back for more chips after your hand has crossed the line is a string bet and the bet stands at whatever you first put out. A verbal statement of action is binding — saying "raise" commits you before a single chip moves.

Common questions

Can you use both hole cards in Texas Hold'em?

Yes, or one, or neither. The best five cards out of the seven play, whatever they are made from.

Who acts first after the flop?

The first active player clockwise from the dealer button — which is the small blind if they are still in.

What happens if two players have the same hand?

The pot is split. Suits never break a tie in Hold'em.

What is a string bet?

Reaching back for more chips after putting some out, without having declared the full amount. The bet stands at the first amount pushed forward.
